4-H is the youth education program of the Cooperative Extension System. This informal education program is conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, state land-grant universities, and local government and combines the work of federal, state and local extension staff and volunteer leaders. Participants are primarily between the ages of 9 and 19 and reside in every demographic area; farm, city and in between. Participation in the 4-H programs is open to all interested youth, regardless of race, color, sex, creed, national origin or handicap. The success of the 4-H program is attributed to the nearly 600,000 volunteer leaders who are backed by the strong educational base of the Land-Grant University staff around the nation.
The mission of 4-H is to assist youth in acquiring knowledge, developing skills, and forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society. This mission is carried out through the involvement of parents, volunteer leaders and other adults who organize and conduct educational subject/project experiences in community and family settings. These "Learn-by-Doing" experiences are supported by research and Extension functions represented by the land-grant universities, USDA and cooperating local government with support from the National 4-H Council and other private support.
