WINNERS OF 2010 Chemistry Titration Competition

From Left: Dr. Narayana Balakrishnan (UOG Chemistry Professor), Hannah Bou-Lai Lam, Clarabelle Santos, St John’s School; Cody Pumper and Robert Lizama, Guam High School; Joon Wha Park, Harvest Christian Academy; Marten Lai and Lawrence J Alcairo, Father Duenas Memorial School; Cecilia Vaughan, St. Thomas Catholic High School; Dr. Maika Vuki (UOG Chemistry Professor)

There were 24 competitors of 12 teams, from six high schools, that compete in this years Chemistry Titration competition. Students were judged on the precision and accuracy of their experimental results. The first prize for the Best Team with the highest overall score was won by Hannah Lam and Clarabelle Santos of St John’s High School. The second prize for overall team score went to Lawrence Alcairo and Marten Lai of Father Duenas Memorial School, and the third prize was won by Cody Pumper and Robert Lizama of Guam High School.

The first prize in the Best Individual Score was won by Joon Wha Park from Harvest Christian Academy and the prize for the Best in Laboratory skill was won by Cecilia Vaughan of St Thomas Catholic High School. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all the competitors. The competition was organized by the Chemistry Program with the help of the undergraduate Teaching Assistants.

Chemistry Titration Practice Session: March 5th at 2-5pm

The Chemistry Program at UOG will be hosting a Titration Competition for High School students on the 9th of March 2010. In order to prepare students for this competition, the chemistry program will hold a practice session on March 5th from 2.00pm5.00pm. The practice session will be held in Room SC230, Science Building, at UOG. This session is open to all those students who will compete in the main Titration event. In order for your school team(s) to attend the practice run, we will require their names to be sent to us, together with their completed entry forms by March 1st. The practice session is designed to give students more ‘hands-on’ experience in titration and steps in calculation that will be involved. The practice session was also held last year, 2009, and those that attended found it extremely useful. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Dr. Maika Vuki, 735 2784 or mvuki@uguam.uog.edu.

The Chemistry Program at the Division of Natural Sciences in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences of UOG is organizing theTitration Competition for Guam high schools on March, 9th 2010. The competition will be held at the chemistry laboratory located in the second floor (SC 230) of the Science Building at UOG campus. All the high schools in Guam are invited to participate in this event. This competition aims to test the chemical knowledge and the analytical skills of students based on a quantitative laboratory experiment. Each school is allowed to send two teams and each team should consist of two students.  The best team will be judged onthe precision and accuracy of their experimental values. The chemistry faculty and staff will be facilitating this event. For more details on this competition, contact Dr. Maika Vuki, 735 2784  mvuki@uguam.uog.edu

Schools that wish to participate in this event should contact the chemistry department and complete the relevant documents.

All participants in the competition will be required to have completed a titration experiment and be familiar in handling the apparatus and materials that are used in this experiment.

2009 Winners
In 2009, almost all participants attended the Titration Practice Session that was run by the Chemistry Department. This event was held on February 20th, 2009 in the chemistry laboratory, room SC230. The Titration Practice session provided the students with a better knowledge on the chemical principles, experimental skills, and the calculation requirements for the March 10th Competition.

Justine Denusta and Norma Phillips of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School earned the highest overall team score and first prize at the University of Guam ’s Chemistry Titration Competition held on March 10, 2009. Norma Phillips went on to earn the highest overall individual score.
