CAST Project Grant

PROJECT ABSTRACT

Dr. Alicia Aguon, of the Division of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Guam, via the Professional & International Programs (PIP), wrote the proposal for the CAST (Content Area Specialized Teachers) Project: grant application.  The project’s goal is: to design, initiate, implement, and manage an effective professional development program for teacher leaders that will:  (1) strengthen K-12 teachers’ content knowledge,  2) enhance K-12 teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge and skills for instructional support, and 3) improve mentoring and leadership practices, all aimed at sustaining positive change and impacting student learning.

Targeted within this region are twenty-four (24) Guam Public School System teacher leaders, grades K – 12, with an inevitable impact on an estimated 600 to 1,500 school students. Components of the CAST Project include research-based training of teachers in content area cohorts in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts, classroom support for creating materials and lessons, interactive classroom observations, lesson study, and networking through web-based support.

A mentor teacher model will be utilized throughout the CAST Project as a means for providing teacher leaders with the opportunity to participate in professional development experiences that model standards-based content, instruction, and evaluation practices.
