Economic Models of Fish Shoal (School) Size
(a near comprehensive analysis of single species shoaling)
Dr. Peter C. Mayer, Marine Lab, UOG
Why would fish ever congregate in groups or shoals? Why is a given species of fish sometimes found as loaners and sometimes in shoals? Does it make sense that migrating herring, torpedo shaped fish about 8 inches long, migrate is shoals undulating over 17 miles of ocean? How do environmental variables affect shoal size?
The talk will review the explanations for fish shoaling. The new research to be presented will use the simplest of simple economic analysis, that introduced early in the first class of economics, to answer the other question given above. Although economists and those that have taken one course in economics will be entertained, the simple economics will be explained. The only prerequisite is curiosity about how simple analysis can address an issue that fish behaviorists have considered very important.
