UOG 6th Math Day will be held at Hilton on May 4, 2013.

(New!!) UOG 6th Math Day's keynote speaker, Dr. Akiyama will give another talk for 4:30-5:30pm on May 3, 2013 at UOG Room SBPA 150.  Everyone is welcome.
 
    Title:『Math behind Art and Music』

    Abstract
    I will talk about several theorems which have beautiful applications for paintings and music. Many artworks created by using mathematical theorems will be presented.

UOG 6TH MATHEMATICS DAY
at HILTON GUAM RESORT & SPA, MAY 4, 2013
8:30-12:45: Micronesian Room
 We are pleased to announce the 6th Math Day.  We will invite a renowned mathematician and
math educator as a guest speaker, Dr. Jin Akiyama from Research Center for Math & Science Education at Mathematics at Tokyo University of Science (TUS), and will hold the event at Hilton Guam Resort & Spa.

8:30 – 9:00       Opening and Award Ceremony for the Math Contest winners
9:00 – 10:30    Math Quiz Competition

10:30 – 11:00    Break and refreshments

11:00 – 12:30   Math Spectacle Show by Dr. Jin Akiyama
12:30 – 12:45    Announcement of the winners of MATH QUIZ and Final Remarks
 
    Ice water will be provided during the event. You can buy food/drinks in the Hilton Lobby, however,
       NO *OUTSIDE FOOD AND DRINKS CAN BE BROUGHT INTO THE HOTEL
      *home-packed, fast-food, caf・drinks, canned or fountain soda, packaged food , etc.
 
In the first part of Math Day, we will again have Math Quiz Competition, which the participants and audience enjoyed very much in last year.  Teams from individual high schools will solve math problems and trivia questions in front of a live audience.
 
The second part will be a lecture given by our special guest speaker.

Dr. Jin Akiyama, Research Center for Math & Science Education at Mathematics at Tokyo University of Science (TUS)

    Abstract
    Math is a base of not only science and technology but also everything including art, music and sports etc. We will demonstrate them in visual way in this show so that you can recognize its importance and usefulness.
    Contents
    1. You can be an artist like Escher.
    2. Music & Pythagorean Theorem
    3. Triangle Drill and Artificial Heart
    4. Find the Volumes of Pigs and Foxes(Reversible Solids)
    5. Don't tell a lie. Polygraph (Error Correting Code)
    6. Kidney Stone(Applications of Ellipse)

 Past Math Day
 
  In the past Math Day we talked about the Mathematics Program at UOG, had some fun math activities/workshops for the students, and also we had a panel discussion about different career opportunities for math majors.

In the 5th Math Day, we invited a renowned math educator, Prof. Deborah Hughes-Hallett from University of Arizona and Harvard Kennedy School.  She gave two other lectures during her stay in Guam:

"Math Day" is organized by the Division of Mathematical Sciences of the Colleges of Natural and Applied Sciences of the University of Guam.
