Hagåtña, Guam — First Hawaiian Bank and Guam Business Magazine awarded a total of $15,907.50 in scholarships to fifteen students in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements. Ten students from Guam and five students from Saipan are the recipients of the 2013 First Hawaiian Bank Guam Business Magazine Businesswoman of the Year scholarship awards.
Since 2006, the program has awarded a total of $152,555 in scholarships to deserving students in the community.
The First Hawaiian Bank and Guam Business Magazine Businesswoman of the Year scholarship award program provides funding for student scholarships at three higher education institutions in the Mariana Islands: University of Guam, Guam Community College and Northern Marianas College. The scholarships are intended to promote higher education through financial assistance for college students pursuing professional careers.

The scholarships were awarded based on the recipients’ total number of credit hours enrolled in the fall semester,their grades, involvement in the community and potential to become successful business people. All applicants were required to submit a written essay and evidence of financial need. Each of the recipients has a grade point average of3.0 or higher. Applications were open to full-time and part-time students of the three educational institutions.
Funds for the scholarships were raised through the 2013 Businesswoman of the Year Gala, held on April 29, 2013.In addition to raising funds for these scholarships, the annual event recognizes women who make a difference in business.
The 2013 Businesswoman of the Year Maga'haga award recipient was Marie Calvo Monge, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Producer of Pacific Telestations Inc. which operates the stations of KUAM. Past recipients include Mary P. Rhodes (2012), president of the Guam Hotel & Restaurant Association and president of MARQ Consulting Services;Joyce Quinata Crisostomo(2011), executive director of Cars Plus and president of Payless Car Rental; Anna Wang Kao (2010), founder and president of Genghis Khan Furniture Co.; Lorraine S. Okada (2009), executive manager of Carlsmith Ball LLP and president and owner of Managing Consulting Services; Julienne Rose Perez Duenas (2008),physical therapist, owner and clinical director of Sports, Orthopedic and Active Rehabilitation Inc.; Christine Won Pat Baleto (2007), general manager of Market Wholesale Distributors;and Katherine Calvo Sgro (2006),executive vice president and chairwoman of the board for Pay-Less Markets Inc.
