TRITON SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Mary Sheffield Kuwana
Dr. Mary Sheffield Kuwana, a board-certified Nurse Practitioner at the Colorado Health Medical Group still recalls the Charter Day Celebrations she participated in. Her favoritememories include helping to build a hut for the hut competition which used to be a major highlight of the celebrations, and coordinating a water balloon fight between the Department of Nursing and the Communications Department.
Dr. Kuwana graduated from the University of Guam in 1985 with an AS from the College of Nursing. She also earned degrees from other institutions including her AA from Lake Sumter Community College, her BSN/MSN from the University of Florida in 2007, and her DNP at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs in 2010.
Today, the proud UOG alumna provides health care for patients in the Colorado Springs area. She offers them preventative and chronic health maintenance care and she specializes in women’s health, holistic health, and acute cardiac conditions.
She recently made contact with the University of Guam through our website. “I just wanted to send a note to the UOG College of Nursing and thank them for the strong nursing foundation they instilled in me. I completed my academic career with my Doctorate in Nursing Practice at the University of Colorado after raising my children,” she says. “I am currently working as an independent practitioner and I attribute my holistic approach to the foundations I learned while attending UOG. I'm now 51 years old and am blessed with a successful practice. Thank you UOG College of Nursing,” she adds.
Dr. Kuwana hopes that her former University classmates are all enjoying their lives and are mindful of their health. “I believe the foundation of health rests with loving your God, loving yourself, then you are enabled to love others, love what you do, and fully appreciate your life,” she explains.
Dr. Kuwana is also a certified Reiki master. She believes the root cause of many illnesses is stress, and she works closely with patients to identify triggers and develop stress-management techniques. During her spare time, she volunteers at her grandchildren’s school (when she’s not spoiling them) and she enjoys skiing, hiking, and cycling.
