UOG PCEI to Host Learn Local Event at Agana Shopping Center

November 8, 2012 – The University of Guam’s Pacific Center for Economic Initiatives (UOG PCEI) will be hosting a Learn Local event on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the Agana Shopping Center, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  There will be presentations and activities promoting the importance of thinking, supporting, and buying local.  Top six winners among participants in the holiday greeting card design contest will also be announced.

The event is part of the educational marketing campaign Learn Local: Totes for Teachers (Buy Local Guam) launched in October 2012.  Guam Department of Education fifth-grade teachers and students received tote bags filled with items, such as folders, magnets and stickers, to help promote the initiative.  The objective is to reach households in order to help families understand the value of supporting Guam-based businesses and the resulting positive multiplier impact to the local economy.  This in turn helps to support local jobs and the quality of life of Guam’s community at-large.

Furthermore, students were invited to participate in a greeting card design contest highlighting the theme: What does Christmas/Holiday on Guam mean to me?  Designs will be displayed in the center court of the Agana Shopping Center for public viewing.  Contest winners will have their artwork featured on Zories Only greeting cards and sold as a local product.  Zories Only will then donate a portion of greeting card sales to the schools, thereby supporting public education.

This project is supported with funding from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs in collaboration with the Guam Chamber of Commerce, Guam Young Professionals, Guam Economic Development Authority, Guam Small Business Development Center and corporate sponsors, including Bank of Guam, Cassidy’s Associated Insurers, Hawaiian Rock Products, and Zories Only.
