UOG WPCRI Hosts Research Symposium

 

The Western Pacific Coral Reef Institute (WPCRI) at the University of Guam is hosting a research symposium on November 16, 2012 from 8am to 3pm at the Hyatt Regency Guam.  The symposium will feature presentations on management-focused coral reef ecosystem research projects conducted throughout Micronesia. 

 

The projects were selected based on a set of research priorities vetted by the WPCRI Management Committee, which is made up of regional partners and competitively selected based on a regional peer review process.  Scientists located throughout the region will be presenting on the following topics:

  • Small-Scale Marine Protected Areas Provide Benefits to Coastal Sharks And Reproductive Teleosts. Presented By: Conservation Society of Pohnpei
  • Improving Local Capacity for Local Coral Monitoring Programs in the FSM and RMI.Presented By: Pacific Marine Resource Institute, Inc.
  • Comprehensive Assessment of Local Perceptions, Affecting Change and Engaging the Community.  Presented By: Sea Grant Guåhan, and the Environmental Education Committee
  • Integrating Reef Resilience and Climate Change Vulnerability into Protected Area Design and Management in the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands and Greater Micronesia, with a Second Location of Palau.   Presented By: The Nature Conservancy

The Western Pacific Coral Reef Institute is a collaborative regional partnership whose mission is to protect and preserve Micronesia’s reefs through multidisciplinary basic and applied scientific ecosystem research that is directly applicable to management practices, as well as via training and education.
