UOG GREEN INTERNS WORK WITH OKAYAMA UNIVERSITY ON RECYCLING SURVEY

University of Guam Green interns assisted Okayama University in a survey project to determine the best areas to place recycling and waste collection bins. The UOG Green interns distributed surveys to tourists in the Tumon area on Wednesday and Thursday, January 16 to 17.

Okayama University started the survey and recycling implementation project in 2012 after Dr. Takeshi Fujiwara of Okayama University noticed that tourists in Tumon were lacking access to recycling and waste separation facilities. He then began developing a plan to provide the tourism sector with the appropriate means to separate their trash and recycling.

Dr. Fujiwara requested participation from the UOG Green interns, because of UOG’s leadership in green and sustainability awareness. “We deeply appreciate the time and effort Okayama University is providing to help Guam become a more sustainable island. And of course the UOG Green interns are prepared to assist in any way they can,” says UOG Sustainability Coordinator Elvie Tyler.
