Triton Athletics and TakeCare present all-new fitness classes at Fitness Center

1/23/2019

The University of Guam’s Triton Athletics Department and TakeCare Insurance Co. Inc. will begin a partnership on Jan. 23, 2019, offering a large new selection of fitness classes to enhance the UOG Triton Fitness Center in the UOG Calvo Field House for the mutual betterment of the health, wellness, and fitness of the UOG community and the TakeCare customers who will use the facility.

UOG Athletics Director Doug Palmer said the partnership amounts to a great resource for the University and its students, faculty, and staff.

“This will improve our offerings of fitness classes to the UOG community and will provide a full lineup of lunchtime and after-work classes. The classes are aimed to meet the needs of the 20-year-old student, the 60-year-old office worker, and everyone in between," he said.

With the new partnership, the Triton Fitness Center hours will expand. Effective Jan. 22, the fitness center will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

There will be two TakeCare fitness classes from Monday through Friday as well as one Saturday morning class. According to Palmer, “TakeCare will start with eight classes, then add two spin classes in February to total 10 fitness classes, and for the one open time slot during the week, Triton Athletics will add one UOG Fitness Class to completely fill the lunchtime and after-work class offerings.”

The fitness classes to be offered are:

  • Yoga: 12:05 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday
  • Zumba: 5:30 p.m., Monday and Wednesday
  • Strong by Zumba: 12:05 p.m., Monday and Wednesday
  • HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training): 5:30 p.m., Thursday, and 10 a.m., Saturday
  • Spin (exercise bike): To be announced

“This is an exciting collaborative partnership between TakeCare and UOG since TakeCare has always offered health insurance plans and services that have advocated and supported living a healthy lifestyle for its members and their families,” said Arvin Lojo, TakeCare’s health plan administrator. “TakeCare has long established partnerships with various fitness facilities on the island, providing our members access to fitness and exercise activities that appeal to their needs, interests, and lifestyle. We are glad to extend this opportunity to the UOG community."

TakeCare’s Wellness Program Manager Donabel Little added, “As a proud partner, we look forward to pioneering more wellness and fitness programs in the future."

Admission to the UOG Triton Fitness Center will remain the same for the UOG community. UOG students with valid ID are admitted free of charge, and UOG faculty, staff, and alumni may gain a paid membership through the UOG Recreation Program.

TakeCare members can attend the classes for free with their TakeCare Fitness Card, and it will count toward their TakeCare fitness points. TakeCare members can choose the Triton Fitness Center and its programs by designating the fitness center as their preferred fitness facility. The cost, if any, depends upon the subscriber’s particular benefit package. Other local community members may also gain a membership through the UOG Recreation Program. A daily fee of $5 is charged for individuals without membership who would like to try out the Triton Fitness Center and the classes being taught.

Members of other insurance groups can use the UOG Triton Fitness Center if they purchase a membership to the center.

The Triton Fitness Center includes two weight rooms, a free-weight room, and a machine weight room. There are a limited number of cardio machines. It also includes locker rooms, showers, two classrooms, and a carpeted fitness room. Memberships include limited use of the Field House basketball and volleyball courts during “Open Gym” times.
