MAGIC Lab: NASA Guam Space Grant and NASA Guam EPSCoR Hands-on activities from the NASA Guam Space Grant’s STEM Saturday series focused on chemistry, engineering, weather science, and more including Cloud In A Bottle, Filtered Lights, and Electrostatic Force Dancing! Plus, learn about opportunities with the MAGIC Lab for research, internships, workshops, and with the UOG Drone Corps. 23/24

NEW THIS YEAR! Come see UOG Land Grant's brand-new greenhouses! UOG's agriculture students will give you a glimpse of their latest horticulture proejcts, including the propagation of lemongrass, watermelon, papaya, banana, mango, and avocado and will have some seedlings for visitors to take home and plant as well.

NEW THIS YEAR! Operate a drone through an exciting, beginner-friendly training course with the NASA Guam Space Grant program, and discover what it means to be a drone pilot! See how the UOG Drone Corps utilizes drone technology to conduct cutting-edge research on Guam, and learn how to utilize controller-based maneuvers and coding programs to pilot the drones.

circuit tour #1: Agricultural research labs

Every half hour starting at 8 a.m. Last tour at 12:30 p.m. 

Agriculture & Life Sciences Bldg. (Meet at entrance/breezeway)

Take a two-stop tour in UOG Land Grant's agricultural research labs, starting in the Soil Lab, where you'll see a first-hand demonstration of how pH is measured in soil samples. Then we'll stop into the Pomology Lab and get an up-close look at live nematodes and eggs under microscopes, observe an extraction of nematodes, and perform a staining!

DURATION: 20 minutes per lab (45 min total)


circuit tour #2: Urban agriculture & speciality crop tour

Every half hour starting at 8 a.m. Last tour at 12:30 p.m.

NEW THIS YEAR! Take a two-stop tour starting with the UOG Horticulture Lab's growing grounds, where they've been experimenting with growing two new crops for Guam: Roselle hibiscus and black pepper!  Then, see how a backyard can be turned into a single-family agricultural operation, including sustainable methods for housing and caring for chickens, conserving water, and improving soil fertility.

NEW THIS YEAR! Take a behind-the-scenes look in UOG Land Grant's newly refreshed Insect Library! Step inside and explore Guam’s insect world—from World War II to yesterday—and learn about both the beneficial and pest insects that shape the island. You'll see a historic collection of Guam’s insects and spiders and might even get to (gently) touch live butterflies! Then, take a guided stroll down our Cycad Walk, featuring a complete collection of the world's 10 genera of cycads and learn about the threats that are making them one of world's most endangered plant groups.

Come quietly observe on the sidelines of UOG's Chemistry Labs as high school student teams compete in a performance of an acid/base titration. Awards will be presented for Best Individual, Best Team, and Best Laboratory Skill.

Observe and learn fun facts about anatomy including the human brain, bone models, microscope slides and rat dissection.

mammalian dive response demo with Dr. Orr's Lab

NEW THIS YEAR! This activity demonstrates the mammalian dive response (MDR), a natural reflex that helps the body conserve oxygen during “diving-like” conditions such as holding your breath and briefly submerging the face in cold water. It’s a quick, hands-on physiology demo that makes this real body reflex easy to see and understand.
