MESSAGE FROM THE
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT & PROVOST
August 24th, 2020
Start of Fanuchånan 2020 Classes
Håfa Adai, Tritons:
I sincerely hope that you and your loved ones have remained safe throughout the last few months. The pandemic and public health emergency has taken a toll on the island but has shown just how resilient our island is. We’ve all had to find new ways of goingabout our daily lives, working, learning, and teaching.
We are excited to start classes on Wednesday, August 26, 2020. If you haven’t already, you will be hearing from your professors on requirements and schedules as all classes will be taught online during PCOR1. Classes that were scheduled for face-to-face instruction or hybrid during PCOR3 (see Web Advisor for this information) will be taught online until the island returns to PCOR3.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for STUDENTS
Updated: July 9, 2020
GENERAL QUESTIONS: FANUCHÅNAN 2020
Will there be any change to the Fanuchanan 2020 start and end dates as published in the Academic Calendar?
No. There are no changes to the academic calendar for Fanuchanan 2020.
What is the role of students in campus COVID safety?
UOG employees and UOG students have a shared responsibility. Wearing masks; practicing social distancing; following room, bathroom and elevator density guidelines; and sanitizing high-touch surfaces are all critical to campus safety. Everyone must follow these guidelines to avoid spreading the COVID-19 virus on UOG's campus, and to protect yourself and others.
Please do not come to the campus if you are feeling ill or have any symptoms of COVID-19.
Do not come to the campus if you have recently tested positive for COVID-19 or have
recently come into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. Instead
call 311 for advice on Contract Tracing. Contact your health provider for additional
advice. Contact your instructor as well about make-up work.
What measures will UOG take to minimize the spread of COVID-19?
The University will continue to follow COVID-19 public health protocols mandating social distancing and requiring everyone on campus to wear masks.
- To further protect students and employees, classrooms have been re-arranged with strict social distancing protocols - a minimum of 6 feet between every seat with an instructor buffer of 11 to 14 feet at the front of the classroom or lab.
- Seat capacity has been reduced in classrooms to 25-30% of the original amount. Instructors may rotate student attendance to facilitate safe learning environments.
- Elevators will be restricted to one (1) person at a time.
- Temperature checks will be done at the entry of each building.
- Bathrooms will be generally restricted to two (2) persons as a time.
- High-touch surfaces will be sanitized before each class.
- UOG has also installed plexiglass shields in most offices to provide additional protection for students and employees.
- Hand sanitizer is also available throughout the campus.
- Signage is posted around campus reminding individuals of how to keep safe.
What will happen if a student or employee notifies the university that he or she has tested positive for COVID-19?
Anyone who enters a UOG building will be subject to screening. Screening entails asking a series of pertinent questions to minimize the risk of the COVID-19 spread within UOG facilities. If you answer “YES” to any of the questions below, you will be asked to leave the campus or referred to appropriate Public Health contacts for proper care and guidance.
These questions include, but are not limited to:
- Have you been diagnosed with COVID-19 within the last 14 days?
- Have you had any symptoms that make you likely to be COVID-19 positive (i.e. cough, shortness of breath, fever).
- Do you live with someone who has been or is diagnosed with COVID-19 or traveled within the last 14 days?
- Within the last 14 days, have you been identified as someone requiring self-monitoring
as part of contact tracing related to someone diagnosed with COVID-19?
What if I need a break to take off my mask?
You Go outside of the building you are in, find a space where you can be at least
8-10 feet from anyone, and take off your mask. If anyone approaches you to talk, you
must keep that distance from them without a mask.
What is the proper way to wear a face mask?
Always over your nose and mouth - at the same time. Do not pull a mask down to talk
to someone because you can eject moist particles from your exposed nose and/or mouth.
What if I cannot (for medical reasons) or do not want to wear a mask (or other reasons) while on campus at UOG. What will happen?
Generally, you will not be able to come to campus for classes (or to work). Properly
worn masks are a requirement for everyone who visits the UOG campus. Having one person
not wearing a mask in a room with other people wearing masks creates additional and
unnecessary risk.
Can I still eat my food in the usual spaces on campus?
Generally, no. Most of the eating spaces on campus are not large enough for 8-10 foot distancing without a mask. It is best to eat off campus or in your vehicle.
Am I able to utilize the student study room with my friends for school work?
Am I still able to meet with my professor on campus for advisement on my course work?
Where can I get more student-related information during this COVID-19 pandemic?
The following websites provide more information:

CLASSES AND ONLINE LEARNING
I need help with the technology for my online/hybrid classes, will the university provide technical support?
Yes. Computer Center Assistants (CCA) will provide technical support for students for online delivery. For example, helping with lecture recording, live streaming with web cams and speakers, connecting to virtual meetings, managing chat communications during classes. Contact the Office of Information Technology for more information by calling (671) 735-2640/30 or email helpdesk@triton.uog.edu or visit their help page at https://ithelp.uog.edu/en-us/.
How will I know if my classes are going to held on campus (i.e., Face-to-Face F2F), online (OLL), or a combination of F2F and OLL (Hybrid)?
Will laptops or computers be available for rental or checkout for UOG students that only have their smartphone to access the Internet for their online classes?
The OIT/Computer Center will not have laptop loaners, but the computer labs will be open Mondays-Fridays from 8AM - 7PM and Saturdays 8AM-5PM for student usage.
Will students get reimbursed for in-person classes they can't attend because they answered a screening question "yes"? Is there an on-line back-up for each in-person class should someone test positive?
Remote learning will be available for students who aren’t able to attend face-to-face classes, and videos of lectures may be available online.
Will UOG provide support for Internet access from home? I only have access to the Internet using my smartphone.
UOG has also partnered with Docomo Pacific and GTA on special rates for students for high-speed Internet access.
For more information or contact Docomo Pacific at 688-CARE (2273) or GTA at (671) 644-4482.
Students were given an option to select an alternative grading option for Fanomñåkan 2020. Will this option be available for Fanuchånan 2020?
Will there be an additional cost or fee to register for a class that has been converted to online or hybrid?
No. Students will not be required to utilize a paid subscription to access the learning management system (LMS).
If my class was changed from on-campus to online, will the virtual meeting be held with my professor on the same days and times that were originally planned for the on-campus class?
Yes. The same days and times will be scheduled for the online courses.
What if I need "accommodations" to help me stay engaged in a class when I am sick or if I have a disability?
Contact Ms. Sallie Sablan, Senior Academic Counselor, ADA Specialization, at (671)
735-2640 or email ssablan@triton.uog.edu for assistance. You can also connect with
your instuctor on how accommodations can be put in place to keep you in school.
