National Sea Grant College Program Director Visits Guam
Dr. Nikola Garber, Acting Director of the National Sea Grant College Program, recently
visited Guam. She met with the University of Guam Sea Grant Program and local officials.
Touring the island, Dr. Garber learned about Guam’s unique natural resources, their
cultural importance, and pressing environmental threats.
Commenting on the UOG Sea Grant Program, Dr. Garber shared, “I am happy to see the
program engaging Guam’s community and assisting with important coastal resource issues.
I am encouraged by the potential of the program to continue growing and look forward
to great things to come.”
Based in the UOG Cooperative Extension & Outreach Service, Sea Grant brings the science
of coastal resources to Guam’s people. Recent faculty hires, Dr. Austin Shelton and
Marie Auyong develop enriching outreach activities and support a competitive graduate
student research program focused on healthy coastal ecosystems and resilient communities
and economies.
The National Sea Grant College Program is a partnership between universities and
the Federal government’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), an
agency within the Department of Commerce. The Sea Grant network includes more than
3,000 scientists, engineers, public outreach experts, educators, and students from
over 300 institutions, representing 33 programs in states and territories.
