The Championship Tournament of the 2nd season of the Guam Women’s College Volleyball League will be played on Saturday at the University of Guam Calvo Field House. Semi-Finals will be played at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., with the Championship Match being played at 2:00 p.m.

The first semi-final match features the #1 seed University of Guam Lady Tritons against the Pacific Islands University Tide at 9:00 a.m. UOG is 6-0 on the season and the defending champion from GWCVL Season 1. UOG has won 14 straight matches in the league with no defeats. UOG has an 18-1 record in sets played on the season with their 1 loss coming to the Royal Volleyball Club in a match that UOG had match point at 24-10 and RVC served out the match with 16 straight points for a 26-24 Royals win.

Pacific Islands University has struggled in the GWCVL with a 0-6 record this season and 0-13 for the two seasons. PIU was more competitive in GWCVL Season 1, winning 4 sets that season, but only has won 1 set in Season 2, and that was the first set of the year, 25-22 over Guam Community College and GCC came back to the win the match 3-1. The Tide has not won a set since.

The 2nd semi-final on Saturday morning will feature the #2 Seed, the Royal Volleyball Club team, made up mostly of Notre Dame High School and JV players, who were brought into the league to replace the UOG Trident Club Volleyball Team that was folded when they did not have enough players to start the season.

Guam Community College is the #3 Seed and has a 2-4 record with 2 victories over PIU but 2 losses each to UOG and RVC. But the matches with the Royal Volleyball Club has been close, with one match going 3-2 and the other, 3-1, with the Royals winning, but in 6 of the 9 sets played in the two matches between the teams, both teams have scored at least 20 points each in close and tight sets.

The Royals are 13-9 in sets for the season and GCC is 9-12. Last season, GCC was 3-4 with a 13-14 set record, the GCC team has always been very competitive in the league and definitely have more volleyball talent this season.

The winners of the semi-finals will play in the Championship at 2:00 p.m.

According to the GWCVL Commissioner and UOG Athletic Director Doug Palmer, this season’s league has been a bit more about fun than the first season.

“The first season was more serious and competitive than this year. The UOG Volleyball Club team last season was made up of mostly team members who had started off on the varsity team and there was a rivalry there (and one match with UOG Varsity going 3-2 with the Club Team having 2 match points). GCC and the UOG Club Team fought some real hard matches (all three matches going 3-2) and Pacific Islands, while still losing had improved greatly from first match to last. This year, the UOG and RVC teams are coached by the same coaches, and it is just hard for them not to laugh at each other and while GCC has improved its talent and battles RVC well, PIU has struggled this season while last season, they usually won a set almost every match and often scored 20 points in most sets".
