MARCThe Richard F. Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center (MARC) at the University of Guam announces the 10th installment in its MARC Seminar Series: a lecture by Dr. Laura Marie Torres Souder titled "CHamoru Revision: Redefining Historical Periods ."

“Who has the right and responsibility to challenge conventional/colonial historiography? Indigenous historians do," Souder writes. "For too long, the only written accounts of Marianas history were offered by those who towed the line of 'great men, great deeds.' This so-called official documentation of our lived experience marginalized us to the point that our history became the story of what other people did on our shores. It is time we bring the invisible out of hiding by becoming our own storytellers. In preparation for the permanent exhibit at the Guam Museum, the Technical and Cultural Review Task Force engaged in redefining historical periodization from an indigenous perspective. These newly named periods will be the focus of my presentation."

The MARC Seminar Series lectures are open to the public, free of charge, and held on Tuesdays of every month beginning at 6:30 p.m. The prerecorded lectures by Rlene“Live” Productions will be published on YouTube and the Legislative Channels: GTA 21 and Docomo 117.

Time: Doors opens at 6 p.m. Lecture begins promptly at 6:30 p.m.

Date: Thursday, Dec. 11, 2018

Location: College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Lecture Hall
