UOG Women's Soccer loses first match of season

4/16/2019

The University of Guam Women's Soccer Team lost its first match of the season 3-1 to the Venue Sidekicks in the Guam Football Association Bud Light Amateur Women's League on April 8 at the GFA National Training Center. This will lead to a championship match with the Venue Slay team on Sunday, April 14.

The Lady Tritons, playing with 10 players for the third straight match, gave up an early goal in the first five minutes of the match and then gave up another goal before the half was over to fall behind at halftime 2-0.

At the start of the second half, the Tritons were able to score with Ariya Cruz landing a goal to cut the Sidekicks lead to 2-1, but the Sidekicks scored again to win the match 3-1.

UOG defeated the Sidekicks 4-0 and 2-1 in their first two matches.

The Tritons had only given up three goals all season until this game. The Sidekicks were playing with a full squad of 15-16 players and substituted freely, especially their defense line, to keep them fresh against the UOG outnumbered offense.

UOG falls to 12-1-1 on the season while the Sidekicks improved to 8-4-1. The Tritons have clinched a tie for the Amateur title, but a loss to Venue Slay on Sunday would throw the championship into a tie-breaker situation and the championship would come down to goals against each other as the first tie-break. UOG defeated Slay 2-0 in their first match while both teams tied 0-0 in their second match.

A UOG victory or a tie on Sunday will give the Lady Tritons the outright championship. A Slay victory would send the championship to the tie-breaker. Slay must win by two to go to the next tie-breaker. If Slay wins by three goals or more, they take the title.

Match time is 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, between the two rivals.
