The University of Guam mourns the passing of Dr. Jose Quinene Cruz, who passed away on Jan. 6, 2020, at the age of 73. Cruz served as the fifth president of the University of Guam from 1983-1987.

Cruz began his UOG career as a part-time assistant professor and instructor of public administration and management in the College of Business and Public Administration from 1979-83. In 1983, he joined Gov. Ricardo Bordallo’s staff as the special assistant on education and boards and commissions. That year he was named UOG president by the Board of Regents. After his term as president, Cruz remained with the University serving as a Regents professor, associate professor, and adjunct faculty until 2002.

Cruz began his extensive career in education as a teacher at Mt. Carmel Junior High School in 1969. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Guam, a graduate certificate in rehabilitation counseling from San Francisco State University, and a Doctor of Education from Western Michigan University.

Cruz’s wife is Dr. Teofila Sholing Perez Cruz, who served as a faculty member in the UOG School of Nursing and Health Sciences and as a project leader on the U54 cancer grant projects.

Funeral and memorial services

Mass of Intention and rosary will be held at the St. Therese Chapel at Dulce Nombre De Maria Cathedral-Basilica, Hagåtña at 6 p.m. on Jan. 10; 5 p.m. on Jan. 11; and 6 p.m. on Jan. 13 and 14. On Jan. 12, Mass will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the main church.

Last respects will be held from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Jan. 18 at the cathedral. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. followed by interment service at Pigo Catholic Cemetery in Anigua.

The University of Guam will host a memorial service on campus from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, in the CLASS Lecture Hall.

Scholarship fund

The Cruz family has established a scholarship at the UOG Endowment Foundation in his memory. In lieu of flowers, donations to the scholarship fund can be made at https://give.uog.edu/donate/dr-jose-quinene-cruz-education-scholarship/.

President Thomas W. Krise asks the UOG community to join together in honoring the contributions and memory of the late Dr. Cruz and in offering heartfelt condolences to the Cruz family.
