Families are being sought to participate in a research study on heart health and diabetes in Guam. The study is being conducted by the Pacific Islands Cohort on Cardiometabolic Health, or PICCAH, at the University of Guam.

Participants will be compensated with gift certificates for 76/Circle K and Pay-Less Supermarkets.

Eligible volunteers must be families of at least one child and one biological parent. The child must be between the ages of 4 and 10, and the parent must be between the ages of 18 and 50. The family must have lived in Guam for at least one year.

Involvement in the study includes taking an online survey, completing diet forms online, and having a free lab test done for blood sugar and cholesterol.

PICCAH is a project funded by the National Institutes of Health to collect pilot data in Guam and Pohnpei to help researchers better understand the role of lifestyle determinants in the development of non-communicable diseases. The project is focusing primarily on cardiovascular disease and diabetes, which are among the leading causes of death in Guam and Pohnpei. Islanders in U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands are excluded from national health surveys, limiting data to understand their health risks and long-term health needs.

The deadline to sign up is this Friday, Jan. 29. Interested families can sign up at bit.ly/PICCAHsurvey. For more information, call (671) 686-3426 or (671) 686-3697 or email piccah@triton.uog.edu. The project is also on Facebook and Instagram @piccahstudy.
