Summer fun has officially begun for 110 children who are taking part in the first summer sports camp to take place at the University of Guam since the pandemic. The university is hosting the Triton Athletics Sports Camp, formerly the Adventure Sports Camp, in two-week sessions until mid-August with a focus on learning athletic skills, sports rules, teamwork, and the importance of health and fitness.

“It’s been two long years that we haven’t been able to hold a complete sports camp due to the pandemic, and it’s been fun to have so much energy in the Field House over the summer. The kids are having a great time,” said Carlos R. Taitano, director of the Global Learning & Engagement office, which is running the camp along with Triton Athletics.

Taitano said it may be the only full-time summer camp on island, allowing parents to drop their kids before work at 7:30 a.m. and pick them up at 5:30 p.m.

Led by Recreation Supervisor Swingly Dismas as the head camp counselor, the camp involves indoor and outdoor activities, including badminton, football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, rugby, and tennis. The program also has home COVID test kits available for families from the Department of Public Health and Social Services.

Residents may register their children, ages 5 to 15, for the upcoming sessions:

  • June 27 – July 8
  • July 11 – July 22
  • July 25 – Aug. 5
  • Aug. 8 – Aug. 12

The registration form is available at www.uog.edu/gle/tritonsportscamp. The cost is $275 per two-week session plus a $35 registration fee. An additional child is $250 per session. Non-residents are $550 per session.
