The National Science Foundation’s Inclusion Across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science, better known as the NSF INCLUDES initiative, at the University of Guam has begun accepting applications for its year-long Supporting Emerging Aquatic Scientists (SEAS) Island Alliance undergraduate fellowship.

NSF INCLUDES is a comprehensive national initiative designed to enhance U.S. leadership in discoveries and innovations by focusing on diversity, inclusion, and broadening participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at scale.

“The program aims to provide opportunities for islanders to be a part of STEM and have their perspectives and unique contributions be heard and represented,” said Remedios Perez, NSF INCLUDES program associate. “They will be working in the labs and field with mentors who will help them hone their research and presentation skills with real-time application.”

The fellowship, which will run from January to December 2023, is open to UOG undergraduate students interested in environmental science, marine biology, botany, ecology, social science, and sustainability. Pacific Islanders, women, LGBTQIA+, and other groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM programs are encouraged to apply.

Student benefits

Selected fellows will receive the following:
• a monthly stipend of $500
• comprehensive research and outreach training
• faculty and near-peer mentorship
• potential travel opportunities

How to apply

The deadline for applications is October 31, 2022, with decision notifications to be given on November 18, 2022.
