Students in the University of Guam’s first M.S. in Data Science cohort in April 2025. The university will be adding a graduate-level data science certificate program, intended to accommodate working professionals, for the Fall 2025 semester.

In the Fanuchånan (Fall) 2025 semester, the University of Guam will begin a new graduate-level certificate program in data science. The certificate requires 15 credits of in-person coursework, which is possible to complete in one academic year. In an effort to accommodate working professionals, all classes are scheduled at 4 p.m. or later.

“The certificate program offers a focused, hands-on alternative to our M.S. in Data Science. It’s ideal for professionals and students seeking core skills in statistical modeling, machine learning, and data visualization,” said Grazyna Badowski, chair of the M.S. in Data Science Program.

Students who complete the certificate may choose to continue into the M.S. in Data Science Program with 15 of the 30 credits completed.

Admission requirements

Graduate program applications for the fall semester are due July 1. To be considered for admission to the certificate program, applicants must have or submit the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in mathematics, computer science, biology, chemistry, statistics, psychology, or public health
  • Minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • Completed graduate admission application and application fee
  • Official transcripts of all completed coursework
  • Letter of intent and statement of purpose
  • At least two letters of recommendation
  • Current resume

In addition, applicants must have completed the following undergraduate prerequisites or equivalent courses prior to entering the program:

  • Multivariate Calculus (MA-205)
  • Linear Algebra (MA-341)
  • a statistics course with lab — either MA-387 and MA-387L or BI-412 and BI-412L.

Those who have not completed these pre-requisites may enroll in a bridge course (MA-501) offered during Session C of summer classes; however, this course does not count toward the certificate.
