Jimmy Yi was named the new Triton Men’s Basketball coach at the University of Guam on Tuesday, July 1. Yi replaces Argie Flores, who stepped down after serving two years as head coach of the UOG team.

Jimmy is a basketball coach on Guam with over 10 years of experience and has served as both a national team coach and a high school coach. He is currently a travel team coach through his Y Impact business and recently had a team travel to Vietnam for games last week.

He has served as the boys’ basketball coach at Father Dueñas Memorial School for three years as head coach, winning two championships, and for five years as an assistant coach. He also coached at the Academy of Our Lady of Guam for five years, winning one high school championship and finishing as runner-up for four seasons.

Jimmy was the head coach of the Guam Men’s National Team in 2024, leading them to a gold medal at the Micronesian Games. He previously served as the assistant coach for the Guam Women’s National Team from 2014 to 2019 and was the head coach of the Guam Junior National Team for four FIBA tournaments over a five-year span.

He served as the head coach of the Guam U18 team at the FIBA 3x3 Championships in Hungary in 2015.

UOG Athletics Director Doug Palmer said, “First, we would like to thank Argie Flores for having a competitive team over the last two years and keeping a lot of kids playing for UOG, but now we are excited about Jimmy Yi as our coach. Hopefully, Jimmy can recruit some athletes to play for UOG and bring some more success to our program.”

The team will begin playing in the competitive Triton League this October, but they will prepare by participating in some community tournaments beforehand.

UOG also announced that Cecile "Cil" Olandez will continue as the Triton Women’s Basketball coach, and Joey Tedpahogo will remain the head coach for both the Triton Men’s and Women’s Volleyball teams for the 2025–26 academic year. UOG will sponsor only four sports during the 2025–26 season: men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s volleyball.
