Dr. Hiroshan Hettiarachchi (Center), the Dean of the School of Engineering (SENG) and Director of the Water and Environmental Research Institute of the Western Pacific (WERI) at the University of Guam, was awarded the Best Practice Journal Paper Award from the Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He was presented the award during the EWRI Congress in Anchorage, Alaska on May 21.

Hettiarachchi was recognized for his paper, “A Field-Verified Model to Estimate Landfill Methane Flux Using Surface Methane Concentration Measurements under Calm Wind Conditions,” on which he collaborated with the landfill research team from the University of Calgary’s Centre for Environmental Engineering Research and Education. The article was published in the ASCE Journal of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste and proposes a simple and cost-effective way to estimate methane emissions from landfills as an alternative to traditional measurement methods that are more complex and expensive.
