Team Austability Wins Triton League Championship
Team Austability won the Triton Men's Basketball League championship on Monday night, May 5, in the UOG Calvo Field House with an 88-77 victory over the KFC Bombers.
This season, the game followed the same script as most Team Austability and KFC Bombers games. It started slow with good defense and a lot of missed shots early. In the four meetings during the spring season of the Triton League, Team Austability averaged 88.75 points, and the KFC Bombers averaged 76.75 points, which was almost the exact score of the championship game.
During the first five minutes, Austability missed a lot of 3-pointers, while the Bombers missed many shots under the basket. Austability was without their biggest player on the night, Ben Borja, so the Bombers could rebound better and lead after the first quarter, 23-20, over Austability.
But in the 2nd quarter, Team Austability found their offense and put up 28 points, led by Mark Johnson's 8 points. Still, the Austability defense was more impressive, holding the Bombers to 9 points during the quarter, and Team Austability led 48-32 at halftime.
The Bombers made a comeback in the 3rd quarter, scoring 20 points in the period and holding Austability to only 14 points. The Bombers trailed by 10 points going into the 4th period, 62-52.
The Bombers made a run at coming back even more in the final 10 minutes, scoring 25 points in the period and twice cutting the Austability's lead to 6 points. However, Austability hit six three-point shots in the quarter and eventually scored 26 points in the period, keeping KFC from getting any closer, and were able to win the game 88-77.
Mark Johnson led team Austability with 30 points, while Joe Blaz scored 17 and DJ Osborn added 13. The KFC Bombers, as usual, had a balanced attack led by Jaylin Calhoun with 17 points, Kortez Hixon added 15, and Chris Townsend with 14.
Team Austability ended the season with a 10-1 record, their lone loss a forfeit game when the Guam National Team was off-island playing in FIBA qualifying games. The KFC Bombers completed the season at 8-4, with all four losses coming to Team Austability. The Bombers were 8-0 against the rest of the Triton League.
