UOG Horizons: More months, more benefits: Breastfeeding builds a healthier future for the Marianas
Science is beginning to paint a clearer picture of how long-term breastfeeding benefits human health as babies and beyond. In its 2020–2025 edition, the “Dietary Guidelines for Americans” includes diet recommendations for the first time for children under the age of 2. These recommendations are to exclusively breastfeed until 6 months old and to continue breastfeeding with complementary foods for at least one year. The American Academy of Pediatrics and World Health Organization go even further, recommending breastfeeding for up to two years or longer.
