UOG’s Dr. Ernesto Guades Becomes ABET Program Evaluator
Dr. Ernesto Guades, an assistant professor in the University of Guam’s School of Engineering (SENG), has completed training to serve as a program evaluator for civil engineering under ABET, which accredits college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.
As a member of the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, Guades will evaluate
civil engineering programs over a five-year term. In this role, he will review academic
materials, conduct campus visits, and contribute to decisions that determine whether
programs meet the standards required for accreditation.
Selected last year by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Guades underwent
ABET’s comprehensive Program Evaluator Candidate Training, which included a web-based
component and culminated with an in-person simulated visit training held May 31 -
June 1, 2025, in Baltimore, Maryland.
“Being an ABET Program Evaluator will strengthen my ability to ensure that UOG’s Civil
Engineering program continues to meet rigorous professional standards,” said Guades.
“It also opens doors for collaboration and knowledge exchange across disciplines and
institutions, which ultimately benefits our students and faculty at UOG.”
In September 2024, UOG’s Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering program received
the maximum six-year accreditation from ABET, a significant milestone for UOG and
for Micronesia’s only four-year civil engineering degree program.
