Poultry farmers and backyard chicken growers are invited to a University of Guam Land Grant workshop to learn about insect pests that can affect the health of chickens. The workshop will be held from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, on the UOG campus.

Common insect pests for poultry in Guam include mites and several types of chewing lice, which can cause the chickens to have excessive itching and feather loss and can also lead to reduced egg production, weight loss, and anemia.

Led by animal and meat scientist Dr. Jeng-Hung Liu and entomologist Dr. Daniel Johnson of the UOG Land Grant Extension Service with a presentation from Guam’s territorial veterinarian Dr. Mariana Turner at the Guam Department of Agriculture, the workshop will teach participants how to spot possible insects on poultry, identify what the pest is and the effect it can have on poultry’s health, and how to manage the problem.
