Guam Nationals End UOG Tritons Season, Northern Construction Edges MicroFriends 74-71
The Guam Nationals ended the season for the UOG Tritons in the first round of the Triton Men's Basketball League playoffs on Thursday night, December 4, at the UOG Calvo Field House. The #1-seeded Guam Nationals had an easy time with the Tritons, handing them a 103-62 loss. The #3-seeded Northern Construction team had a tougher matchup with the #6-seeded MicroFriends, winning 74-71.
In the nightcap, UOG scored the first basket to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Guam Nationals responded with 10 straight points to take control of the game and never looked back. The Nationals led 23-11 after the first quarter and outscored the Tritons 29-14 in the second quarter, taking a 52-25 lead into halftime.
The Nationals put the game away in the third period, outscoring UOG 30-13 to extend their lead to 82-38 entering the final 10 minutes. They cruised to a 103-62 victory.
The Guam Nationals were led by Sammy Setik with 34 points, and Joe Delia added 25. UOG was led by Ralph Macaldo with 10 points, the only Triton to score in double figures.
The Guam Nationals improved to 8-0 in the Triton League. They will pick up a forfeit win in the semifinals, as the Guam Select U17 team is in Samoa next week for a FIBA tournament and does not have enough players on island to compete. The UOG Tritons finish their season with a 0-8 record.
In the first game of the night, Northern Construction jumped out to a big early lead. Eric Ruiz scored 14 points in the first quarter, helping Northern go up 24-14 after the opening period. The MicroFriends began the game with only six players but expanded their roster to 10 by the second quarter. They rallied in the period and briefly took a three-point lead, but they trailed at halftime, 39-35.
The third quarter was evenly matched, with both teams scoring 17 points. Northern held a 56-54 lead entering the fourth quarter. In the final period, both teams traded leads. Northern Construction eventually gained a five-point advantage late in the game, and MicroFriends could not recover, resulting in a 74-71 loss.
Northern Construction was led by Eric Ruiz with 32 points, while Elmar Moradas added 17. MicroFriends were led by Jose Ignacio with 26 points, and Ken Brozo scored 17.
Northern Construction is now 6-2 in the Triton League, while the MicroFriends finished their season at 2-6.
Northern Construction will face the KFC Bombers next Wednesday night in the semifinal round:

The winner will move on to the championship game on Friday, December 12, at 7:00 pm against Guam Nationals.
