The opening night of the Triton Men's Basketball League on Friday, October 3rd, featured two commanding wins by the powerhouses of the league, the Guam Nationals and KFC Bombers. The Guam Nationals took care of the young bucks of Guam Select U17, with a commanding 113-82 victory. The Bombers showed the UOG Tritons that basketball is a 40-minute game, not a 25-minute sprint.

In the league opener, Guam Select started strong, scoring behind Francis Jones with 13 points and Collin Baker with 9 points, taking an early 30-25 lead over the Guam Nationals, who are made up of a mix of seasoned veterans and younger players from the national program. In the 2nd quarter, the more experienced Nationals began to teach the younger Select players a lesson by putting up 40 points, led by Kristin Guzman with 15 points. The Guam Select still had a good quarter, putting up 24 points. However, they found themselves down 65-54 heading into halftime.

Guam Nationals maintained control throughout the 3rd quarter, extending their lead to 83-72 going into the 4th quarter, and putting up another 30 points in the final 10 minutes of the game. Team Select could only manage 10 points in the last quarter and fell to the Nationals 113-82.

DJ Osborn led the Nationals with 31 points, followed by EJ Cruz with 25 points and Kirstin Guzman with 21 points. Collin Baker paced Guam Select with 33 points, while Francis Jones added 17.

The victory puts the Guam Nationals at 1-0 in league play, while Guam Select U17 falls to 0-1.

In the nightcap, the UOG Tritons started competitively against the KFC Bombers but struggled with turnovers and cold shooting down the stretch. UOG kept pace early, trailing just 26-20 after the 1st quarter. The Tritons maintained a balanced offense in the 2nd quarter, scoring 19 points, but the Bombers’ depth showed as seven players scored in the period to give KFC a 49-39 halftime lead.

UOG started off well in the 2nd half and cut the Bombers lead down to 6 points at 56-50. However, the Tritons couldn't score, and the turnovers began as UOG fell behind the Bombers, leading 63-51 heading into the final quarter. The Tritons managed only 10 points in the 4th quarter, while the Bombers closed strong with 34 points to secure a 97-61 win.

Charles Wingate led the Bombers with 18 points, with AJ Grape adding 16 points. Ralph Macaldo scored 11 points for the Tritons, and Javen Naputi was the only other Triton in double figures with 10 points.

The Bombers are now 1-0 while the Tritons are 0-1.
