UOG Horizons: Knowledge for Life - Feral swine meat - is it any good?
Feral pigs have long been identified as an invasive species in Guam, as they cause disturbance to residents and damage to soils, farms and gardens. It is common to see them running through residential areas and to find large families of pigs foraging on the side of the road. On the flip side, pork is a popular feature in the local cuisine, with items like BBQ short ribs, estufao, adobo and whole roasted pigs regularly making an appearance on the fiesta table. So should we be using this local pest more widely on the island as a food source - decreasing their numbers in the wild while also putting protein on the table and boosting Guam’s food security? It’s a question worth exploring.
