UOG Hosts Introductory GIS Training Course in October

9/30/2025

The University of Guam will host a short-term training course in basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from Oct. 13 to 17, 2025, offering professionals and community members a hands-on introduction to this increasingly vital technology.

The five-day, 20-hour course will introduce participants to the fundamentals of GIS, including spatial data collection, mapping, analysis, and visualization. Participants will use industry tools and applications to explore how GIS can address real-world challenges in areas such as environmental management, urban planning, construction, and public services.

“GIS is an essential tool in today’s data-driven world,” said Dr. Jose Edgardo L. Aban, assistant professor of geography and course instructor. “Through this course, participants will learn how to turn geographic data into practical insights for real-world planning and problem-solving.”

The seminar will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily at the Geographic Information Learning Laboratory (GILLs) in Room 207 of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building on the UOG campus in Mangilao.

The course is open to all interested professionals and community members. The registration fee is $300, and payment details will be provided following pre-registration. Space is limited.
