End-of-summer nutrition workshop at UOG to help residents shift into healthier habits

The SNAP-Ed Program under the University of Guam Land Grant Extension Service invites adults ages 18 and older to attend “Ready, Set, Eat: Prepare for Healthier Days Ahead,” a free nutrition education workshop series designed to help participants prepare healthy, budget-friendly meals.
The four-part series will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Fridays, Aug. 21, Aug. 28, Sept. 4, and Sept. 11 at the UOG Agriculture & Life Sciences Building.
“Meal planning in a budget-friendly and nutritious way is a skill you can use throughout your life,” said Lenora Matanane, a registered dietitian nutritionist with UOG Land Grant who is guiding the series. “And it’s a great time to start — whether you’re looking to upgrade your typhoon diet or adjust your eating and lifestyle for back-to-school or post-summer activities.”
Facilitated by Katrina Nguyen, nutrition educator for Guam SNAP-Ed under UOG Land Grant, the series will teach participants:
- practical strategies for setting healthy habits;
- how to build a balanced diet;
- how to understand Nutrition Facts labels and ingredient lists;
- how to shop wisely and create nutritious meals within a budget.
Each workshop will include a taste testing of healthy meals made with shelf-stable or frozen ingredients, and on the final session, participants will have an opportunity to cook and apply what they have learned.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture–funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program–Education (SNAP-Ed) program has been delivering healthy eating curriculum in Guam since 2015. This will be the final SNAP-Ed workshop to be offered for Guam residents following the federal termination of the program in 2025.
