Insects are among the most successful creatures on the planet. They dominate terrestrial ecosystems and are found in some of the most extreme environments - from petroleum wells and hypersaline lakes to the icy landscapes of Antarctica. Yet, for reasons that still puzzle scientists, insects have never truly conquered the open ocean.

There is one exception, however, known as Halobates, and one place in the world that this marine insect group calls home is right here in Guam.
