UOG Hosts Visiting Artist-in-Residence Gisela McDaniel

The University of Guam is pleased to announce that the Isla Center for the Arts is currently hosting New York-based visual artist Gisela McDaniel as a visiting Artist-in-Residence
until March 15.
McDaniel is working on “Kinship Routes: Painting the Living Archive,” a project that
consists of several large-scale paintings that will integrate the oral histories and
multigenerational narratives collected from CHamoru women. McDaniel’s art will be
displayed at the Isla Center for the Arts during UOG’s Charter Day on March 5.
McDaniel will host discussion groups with UOG students and a community collaboration. She will also hold an artist lecture on Thursday, February 26 at 2:00pm in the UOG CLASS Lecture Hall.
Additionally, McDaniel has open studio hours at the UOG Tan Lem Pek Kim English and Communication Building, Room EC202 every Tuesday this month from 1:30 pm to 4 pm. Visitors can stop by to meet her and discuss her art.
McDaniel is a diasporic indigenous CHamoru artist who is known for combining oil painting, assemblage, audio storytelling, and motion-sensor technology to create an immersive experience for viewers. Her work has been featured in exhibits across the U.S., Germany, London, and Seoul. Last year, she was named one of Artmag’s 30 Under 30: The Most Influential Artists Under 30.
“We are very excited to welcome Gisela McDaniel as our first Artist-in-Residence at the University of Guam,” said Dr. Velma Yamashita, coordinator of the Isla Center of the Arts and professor of art at UOG. “Since her arrival, she has been creating works and giving presentations in a range of Fine Arts classes, sharing her experiences as a full-time professional artist and offering meaningful insight to our students.”
The Artist-in-Residence is funded by a grant from the Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Agency with additional support from Matson and Triple J.
