Four University of Guam students gained international experience this summer after receiving Global Learning & Engagement (GLE) Travel Scholarships to participate in an immersive academic and cultural program at Seo Kyeong University in Seoul, South Korea.
The students participated in the program from June 26 to July 4, where they strengthened their global perspectives through Korean language instruction, cultural exchange, and experiential learning activities. The GLE Travel Scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students from all academic disciplines and supports UOG’s commitment to preparing graduates for success in an increasingly interconnected world.
This year’s scholarship recipients are:
- Clarisse Tarroma, a senior majoring in Psychology;
- Norielynn O’Connor, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Guam in 2016 and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in counseling;
- Amber Rose Hecita, who graduated in May with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology; and
- Amara Sula, who also graduated in May with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
The program at Seo Kyeong University combines classroom instruction with hands-on cultural experiences. Students attend intensive Korean conversation classes each morning before participating in afternoon activities that introduce them to Korean culture and society.
Program highlights include visits to Seoul’s Myeongdong shopping district, a K-beauty workshop, a K-pop dance class, art therapy activities, and a field trip to Lotte World, one of South Korea’s premier theme parks.
“International experiences give our students opportunities to develop cross-cultural communication skills, broaden their perspectives, and build relationships that extend beyond the classroom,” said Carlos Taitano, Director of Global Learning and Engagement at UOG. “These experiences prepare them to become globally engaged professionals and leaders who can make meaningful contributions to Guam and our region.”
The UOG Global Learning & Engagement Office offers study abroad and international
exchange opportunities that complement students’ academic programs while fostering
cultural understanding and global citizenship. Through initiatives such as the GLE
Travel Scholarship, the University continues to expand opportunities for students
to gain valuable international experience that enhances both their education and future
careers.
Students interested in future GLE travel scholarships and international programs are encouraged to contact the UOG Global Learning & Engagement Office for information about upcoming opportunities and application requirements.
