Guam 4-H Youth Development is inviting the community to take part in the National 4-H Week festivities during the week of Oct. 4–10. National 4-H Week is an annual celebration of 4-H’s work nationwide and here in Guam to prepare youth to be “Beyond Ready” for college, career, and life.

Since its establishment in 1972 under the University of Guam Land Grant Extension Service, Guam 4-H has been engaging youth through week-long enrichment camps, field trips to UOG, school and community clubs, and school programs and curriculum. It is part of the nationwide 4-H network, which is the country’s largest youth development organization, bringing hands-on learning experiences to six million youth to help them thrive in a rapidly changing world.

“4-H is about giving Guam’s youth opportunities to discover what excites them, try new things, and see just how much they are capable of,” said Dareon Rios, an extension agent and instructor with Guam 4-H. “As we celebrate National 4-H Week and continue our year-round programs, we’re excited to celebrate our youth and all who support them. Our hope is that every 4-H youth will build confidence in their abilities, feel connected to their island and community, and be equipped with the skills to pursue future educational, career, and leadership opportunities.”

The 4-H programming is guided by the four foundational H’s – head, heart, hands, and health. From hands-on experiences in chemistry, healthy cooking, and drone technology to seeing agriculture and food systems, insects, and physics in action, the 4-H youth benefit from exposure to a variety of fields, professionals, and potential careers. At the same time, they also make friends and get a sense of the importance of civic engagement, teamwork, and community service.

Join the National 4-H Week festivities

Families, schools, or individuals who have been involved with 4-H as well as community members who want to support the important work of 4-H are invited to celebrate National 4-H Week. There are several ways to get involved:
 

  • Go green: Show your 4-H spirit along with youth, professionals, volunteers, and supporters across the nation on Monday, Oct. 5, by wearing green or a 4-H shirt, lighting up your home or office with green lightbulbs, or decorating your office or classroom in green.
  • Free youth workshops: On Saturday, Oct. 10, Guam 4-H will be offering a variety of free youth workshops. Register at https://url.uog.edu/4hweek-workshop.
    • Grades 1-5:
      • Berry Cool DNA (10 a.m. – 11:25 a.m.)
      • Eat a Rainbow (11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
    • Grades 6-8 (choice of two):
      • Let’s Make Calamansi Sports Drink (10 a.m. – 11:25 a.m.)
      • Let’s Go Targeted Bug Hunting! (10 a.m. – 11:25 a.m.)
      • Junior Fisheries (11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
      • Anatomy in Motion (11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
    • Grades 9-12: Next Level Sewing (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
  • Proclamation signing: Join Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero and the Guam 4-H team for a National 4-H Week proclamation signing in honor of all 4-H youth, volunteers, families, and supporters. The signing will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, at the Ricardo J. Bordallo Governor’s Complex.
  • Share your 4-H story: Share your 4-H photos, memories, stories, or “Go Green” moment on social media using the hashtags #4HbeyondReady and #National4HWeek and tagging @Guam_4H, @uoglandgrant, and @national4H.
  • Become a volunteer or start a club: Adults, teachers, parents, or professionals interested in starting a club or sharing your knowledge with Guam’s youth are encouraged to reach out to our 4-H office for guidance on becoming a volunteer or starting a club.
