University of Guam Press (UOG Press) will launch its first children’s board book, Is That an Åga?, written by Emily Louina Cook and illustrated by Joanne F. Almajose on Saturday, October 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Guam National Wildlife Refuge Nature Center in Litekyan (Ritidian).

Set on the island of Luta (Rota), Is That an Åga? follows Hoben, a young boy searching for the elusive Åga, or Mariana Crow. With the help of his Uncle Gatbo, Hoben discovers that identifying the island’s birds requires careful observation and curiosity. Through storytelling and colorful illustrations, the book introduces young readers to the wildlife of the Marianas while encouraging a deeper connection to the natural world and importance of conservation.

The inspiration for Is That an Åga? stemmed from Cook’s work in environmental education and her interest in ecological literacy. As part of her graduate degree, she developed an avian ecological literacy curriculum for an elementary school on Luta, focused on the Åga. During that process, Cook recognized a lack of children’s picture books that focus on the birds of the Marianas. From there, she set aspirations to create children’s picture books educating about the Mariana Islands and its environment.

Almajose, a Guam-born artist and University of Guam alumna, brings the birds and landscapes of the Marianas to life through her artwork.

Both Cook and Almajose will be at the book launch to share the book and answer any questions young readers may have. The event is open to the public and will include an author reading, book signing, and light refreshments, followed by a guided nature walk and bird-watching session. Attendees will also receive a free sticker sheet and other small giveaways.

Is That an Åga? is available online at uogpress.com for a special pre-order price of $12 and will be $15 after the book’s official release. The book will be available in local bookstores and on Amazon following the launch.
