Climate Science Centers

The Department of Interior Pacific Islands Climate Adaptation Science Center (PI-CASC) is a part of a federal network of eight Climate Science Centers (CSCs) managed by the U.S. Geological Survey National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center (NCCWSC). The CSCs provide natural and cultural resource managers with the tools and information they need to develop and execute management strategies that address the impacts of climate change on a broad range of natural and cultural resources. The CSCs and NCCCWSC focus on the delivery of data, decision-support tools, and other products that are practical and relevant to managers' climate change monitoring and adaptation work.

The Pacific Islands Climate Adaptation Science Center at the University of Guam

Each of the eight CSCs include a university consortium comprised of a host institution and several other partner universities, as well as tribal partners and federal research labs. The PI-CASC consortium is hosted by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and includes the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo and the University of Guam. Our PI-CASC work here at the University of Guam focuses on climate science research that covers the entire Micronesian region, including Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Palau, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The Center for Island Sustainability (CIS)

The Center for Island Sustainability (CIS), a program initiated by the University of Guam President Robert Underwood, has worked closely with PI-CASC at the University of Guam. The CIS tackles various issues relating to island sustainability and continues to develop islands-based models for sustainability. PI-CASC plays an integral role in helping CIS to adapt and model sustainable technologies to meet the environmental, economic, societal, and educational needs of the island communities within Micronesia.
