NSF SEAS INCLUDES launches recruitment for undergraduate STEM fellowship
The National Science Foundation’s Inclusion Across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science (NSF INCLUDES) initiative at the University of Guam (UOG) has begun accepting applications for its Supporting Emerging Aquatic Scientists (SEAS) Island Alliance undergraduate fellowship.
NSF INCLUDES is a comprehensive national initiative designed to enhance U.S. leadership in discoveries and innovations by focusing on diversity, inclusion, and broadening participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at scale.
NSF INCLUDES principal investigator Austin Shelton is excited for the new round of fellowship recruitment.
“We need a true diversity of people, thoughts, and perspectives in science to solve the most pressing challenges on our island and across the planet,” said Shelton. “We encourage students from all walks of life, especially those underrepresented in science --- Pacific Islanders, women, LGBTQIA+ and others --- to apply.”
Selected fellows will receive comprehensive research and outreach training, faculty and peer mentorship, travel opportunities, and a monthly stipend of five hundred dollars.
The fellowship, which will run from January to December 2022, will feature various research themes including environmental science, marine biology, botany, ecology, social science, and sustainability.
The deadline for applications is Oct. 29, 2021 at 5 p.m., with the decision notifications beginning Nov. 17, 2021.
According to NSF INCLUDES co-principal investigator Cheryl R. Sangueza, the fellowship presents an opportunity for growth and development.
“From never having been in a science fair to presenting at a national conference, from being a self-proclaimed couch potato to now being one with the earth, from feeling like one was not good or active in science to being leaders in the field and lab, from never being in a lab to handling million-dollar instruments… our participants often share this fellowship transformed them,” said Sangueza. “This experience can be life changing.”
