The money, pooled from Sgro and local businesses and organizations, will go toward the purchase of isolation gowns for Guam Memorial Hospital workers and the Archdiocese of Agana through the university’s COVID-19 relief fund.

A total of 800 isolation gowns have been purchased for frontline workers at Guam Memorial Hospital and the Archdiocese of Agana with $10,000 from the University of Guam Live Stream Telethon for COVID-19 Relief and an additional $30,000 in donations from Peter Sgro Jr., Ada’s Trust and Investments, the Rotary Club of Tumon Bay, Guam Premier Outlets, and the UOG Endowment Foundation.

“It has been difficult to obtain the isolation gowns — especially the gowns used when caring for COVID-positive patients,” said Margaret Perez Hattori-Uchima, dean of the School of Health at UOG, who has been working with GMH to identify their needed supplies. “The contributions of these generous donors are so important in helping protect our health care workers and enabling them to safely provide care to our people.”

This effort to fundraise for the gowns through the UOG Endowment Foundation was led by Sgro with the mindset of helping the island community.

“We are both proud and humbled by the outpouring of generosity and community support toward UOG’s efforts to combat this crisis and support our island’s frontline workers,” said Katrina Perez, executive director of the UOG Endowment Foundation. “The number of people willing to jump in and help is representative of our island’s spirit. We are thankful for our health care workers who are taking on the most important role during this pandemic, and we want to do anything we can to help them safely perform their critical jobs.”
