Guam History Day
Guam History Day is a year-long historical research program geared towards middle
and high
school students that is led by the Micronesian Area Research Center, with support
from the
Guam Preservation Trust. GHD is an annual island-wide activity that enhances the teaching
and
learning of history at the middle and high school. Guam joins the 50 states, the District
of
Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and international schools as an affiliate of
the National
History Day program.
Every year for the past twelve years, Guam has participated in the National History
Day
competition. This competition endeavors to promote research and problem-solving skills
in the
youth of our community. Students work hard all year researching and analyzing primary
and
secondary sources to create a project on an annual theme set forth by the National
History Day
program in Maryland. The students from Guam’s middle schools and high schools vie
amongst
other students from the public, private and department of defense schools at the Guam
History
Day island-wide contest, held annually at the University of Guam, for an opportunity
to represent
Guam at the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland. At this
event, our
students are faced with peer competition from all fifty states, the territories and
international
foreign exchange schools. Not only are our young people competitors but ambassadors,
as they
interact with thousands of young people from across the country.
