UOG Women and Gender Studies Program Hosts Senatorial Forum
The Women and Gender Studies program at the University of Guam is sponsoring a political candidates forum series
at the CLASS Lecture Hall on Tuesday, October 17, 2016, from 6:00-7:30 p.m., and Wednesday,
October 26, 2016, also from 6:00-7:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments
will be served.
On October 17, Benjamin J. Cruz, Tina Muña Barnes, Mary Camacho Torres, Nerissa Bretania
Underwood, and Telena Cruz Nelson will participate.
On October 26, Judith Won Pat, Melissa Savares, Louise Borja Muña, Regine Biscoe Lee, and Amanda Francel Blas will participate.
Each forum will follow the format of eight to ten student questions for the candidates,
with each candidate responding within two minutes, guided by student moderators Julianne
Hernandez and Norielyn O’connor. At the end of each forum will be an open question-and-answer
session with the audience.
Candidates will be asked to discuss their positions on sexual education, paternity
leave, breastfeeding in the workplace, educational outreach for the Nåna yan Påtgon
Act, daycare at UOG/GCC, the UOG sexual misconduct policy, women’s reproductive rights,
social pressures for LGBTQ young people, and the island’s political status.
The Women and Gender Studies Program at UOG offers a minor and certificate, with many
courses cross-listed with social work, sociology, psychology, literature, and consumer
and family sciences. It is located in the WGS Center in the Humanities and Social
Sciences building, room 205. The program co-sponsored a Female Candidates’ Forum
in 2014 with the Chamorro Studies Program.
