Upcoming CHamoru Language Children’s Book Teaches Useful Phrase
and Promotes Everyday Language Use

Local author Simone Bollinger has written her second children’s book in the CHamoru language with the goal of promoting everyday use of the language. Her book, Un Ha’åni yan Si Ena, was published by Taiguini Books of the University of Guam Press and will be launched at UOG’s RFK Library on Saturday, May 12, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Un Ha’åni yan Si Ena is a colorful, hardcover picture book featuring detailed illustrations by Jack Lujan Bevacqua of Bollinger’s daughter Ena in her daily routines. The book is written entirely in CHamoru with English translations at the back and a useful pronunciation guide. It follows Ena as she wakes up, gets ready for school, learns about the island, visits her grandparents, plays at the beach and settles down for bed. It also includes a CHamoru version of the song “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” Each of Ena’s activities are described with simple and useful phrases, ideal for helping both children and adults learn and use the CHamoru language in their daily lives.

The book launch will feature a special presentation by the author, followed by arts and crafts activities and a book signing. The books will be available for sale at $15 per book.
