University of Guam assistant professor of biology, Dr. Michael Orr, made local headlines last week for assisting in the rescue of four men whose sailboat got stuck on the reef on the shores of Agat.

UOG President Robert Underwood recently met with Orr to recognize him for his efforts.

Orr was preparing for a snorkeling session when he noticed the distressed sailors and began paddling to them on his one-man kayak. Orr says the Guam Fire Department shortly arrived on scene to take over the situation. Orr continued to paddle to and from the sailors bringing life jackets and instructions from GFD because the water around the sailboat was too shallow for GFD’s rescue boat to get close.
