Triton Night - May 2018

UOG Tritons and Tridents reach league championship

The University of Guam Women’s Volleyball Teams, the Varsity Tritons and the Club Tridents, both reached the championship match of the Guam Women’s College Volleyball League on “Triton Night” at the UOG Calvo Field House on Oct. 4.

With about 500 UOG students and employees looking on, the UOG Tritons marched over the Pacific Islands University Tide 3-0 during the opening match of “Triton Night” and the GWCVL Semifinals. The Tritons took early control of the opening set, but the Tide battled back to close within two points at 17-15, but a UOG timeout slowed the PIU momentum and the Lady Tritons outscored the Tide 8-1 to close out the first set 25-16. The No. 1 seeded UOG team powered by No. 4 seeded PIU 25-9 in the second set and then finished the match with a 25-15 victory in the third set to win the match.

Triton Night - May 2018

Triton Night is a UOG Student Government Association sponsored event that provided free T-shirts, free food, contests, and raffles during the opening match of the night. This was the first time that women's volleyball was featured at Triton Night, which was started in 2016 to build school spirit and to recognize the work done by the varsity sport teams on campus.

The event and matches were attended by UOG President Dr. Thomas W. Krise, Guam Community College President Mary A.Y. Okada, and Pacific Islands University President Howard Merrell.

In the second match of the night, the second seeded GCC team took on UOG's recreation club team, the third seeded UOG Tridents, in this semifinal. The two teams had split matches during the regular season, with both teams winning one match each, 3-1 over the other team.

The Tridents defeated GCC 3-2 in the match, by the scores 25-16, 20-25, 10-25, 25-14 and 15-11. The Tridents were down 8-6 in the final set when the teams switched sides of the court and the UOG club came roaring back to gain the lead and win the match.

The Tritons and the Tridents will play in the GWCVL Championship at noon on Saturday, Oct. 6, in the UOG Calvo Field House. Admission is free for the event. The Tritons have swept the Tridents twice during the regular season. The Tritons are 7-0 in the league with a 21-1 set record. The Tridents are now 4-3 in the league with a 13-15 set record.

The Tritons have never lost a match in the three seasons of GWCVL play, running their record to 23-0 over the three seasons with a 69-8 record in sets.
