Recent University of Guam graduates have an opportunity to pursue their master’s or doctorate at a university of their choice in Japan. The Consulate-General of Japan announced that the Japanese government is offering the MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology) Scholarship for 2021 to qualified applicants in Guam.

The scholarship period will last from September or October 2021 until the end of March 2023. Applicants must be willing to learn Japanese and to deepen their understanding of Japan. For students who require preparatory education of the Japanese language, the first six months will be a term of “preparatory education.”

To apply, applicants must:

• Hold U.S. citizenship and live in Guam or CNMI
(U.S. citizens who hold dual citizenship with Japan may apply under the condition they relinquish their Japanese citizenship upon selection)
• Be born on or after April 2, 1986, in principle
• Be a university graduate at the time of participation in the program
• Be able to leave for and arrive in Japan within two weeks of the date set by the receiving university for the beginning of the semester (September or October);
• Conduct research in the same or related field majored as an undergraduate;
• Be able to contact and obtain a letter of acceptance from a professor at the Japanese university they wish to enter.

Completed applications must be received by the Consulate-General of Japan in Hagåtña no later than Friday, July 10, in order to be considered.

All applications will be screened. Those candidates who pass the initial screening will be invited to take the English and Japanese proficiency test. The candidates who pass the writing test will have an interview at the Consulate-General of Japan in Hagåtña.
