UOG TRIO Sends Two High School Students to National Student Leadership Congress in D.C.
The University of Guam TRIO Educational Talent Search Program proudly announces that high school juniors Aleya Roberto and Heaven Mabalot have been selected to represent Guam at the 2025 National Student Leadership Congress (NSLC) from June 15 to 19 in Washington, D.C.
Hosted annually by the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE), the NSLC brings together 100 high-achieving TRIO pre-college students from across the United States and its territories. Participants engage in leadership development, civic education, and experiential learning designed to prepare them to become tomorrow’s change-makers.
Aleya Roberto, an 11th-grade student at George Washington High School, shared her enthusiasm for the opportunity:
“I am deeply honored to have been selected by TRIO to attend the National Student Leadership Congress. TRIO has given me many opportunities and guidance towards my future goals. Participating in this congress will allow me to develop my leadership skills and contribute thoughtfully to discussions that shape the future of our communities. I am thankful for the privilege to connect with other driven and passionate student leaders from across the country, and this opportunity is a milestone in my academic journey. I feel proud to represent my island, and I look forward to bringing back the knowledge and inspiration I gain to help create positive change. I would like to acknowledge the TRIO staff, my parents, and my family for always supporting me.”
Heaven Mabalot, a junior at Okkodo High School, echoed this excitement:
“I am excited for the National Student Leadership Congress because I want to showcase that leadership isn’t just about how intelligent you are, but it is also about compassion, awareness, and effective communication. I want to challenge myself and connect with like-minded peers. I’ve always held the belief that leadership is about bringing inspiration, motivation, and positive influence and I want to find other ways to hone these qualities. My participation in this program allows me to learn and gain insight from experienced mentors/like-minded students and have insightful conversations with them. I’m very excited to hear diverse viewpoints and find newfound ways to lead. Along with improving my style of leadership, I hope to have a better understanding of how I can assist and inspire others. Overall, this program is an opportunity for me to grow as a leader and as an individual. Having a chance to connect with individuals who share similar goals and ambitions is unparalleled, and I'm excited to not only create change but be the change. I can’t wait to experience everything NSLC has to offer, from the leadership workshops to the campus life!”
The six-day program includes a mock congress, workshops on leadership and public speaking, a Capitol Hill visit, and sessions with experienced mentors and peers from diverse backgrounds.
“The student leadership congress in D.C. offers TRIO students the chance to learn about the workings of government and how policies are made,” said Lovelynn Mongami, Director of the UOG TRIO Educational Talent Search Program. “This helps students become more informed and engaged citizens.”
NSLC delegates are challenged to research complex issues, formulate arguments, and collaborate on policy solutions—skills that contribute significantly to academic and career success.
“Participating in NSLC is a valuable experience that can help students develop important skills and knowledge that will serve them well in their academic, personal, and professional lives,” said Kimberly Jones, president of COE. “As we continue to invest in the potential of TRIO students, we see them emerge as leaders who will shape our future for the better.”
