The University of Guam Women’s Basketball Team came out looking sharp with brand-new uniforms and a full squad of 15 players at the UOG Calvo Field House on Monday, September 8. However, the outcome against the U17 Nationals was an 89-35 loss, as the Nationals’ pressure defense was too much for the Lady Tritons to handle in their opening game.

The BallHers opened the season earlier in the night with an easy 83-34 win over JusForFuns, making the first night of the Lady Triton Super League feature two non-competitive games.

In the nightcap, the Lady Tritons looked slow against the U17 National team. The U17ers played physical defense and forced many turnovers. The Nationals led 20-13 after the first quarter, but it was the second quarter that put the game out of reach. The Nationals outscored the Lady Tritons 25-8 in that period to go into halftime up 45-21.

The Tritons would not score in double figures again in the final two quarters, as the U17 Nationals outscored UOG 44-14 in the second half. The Lady Tritons also struggled at the free-throw line, making only 12 of 24 attempts.

The U17 Nationals were led by Lana Quanta with 17 points, followed by Maddy Ada with 14 and Gabby Hahn with 13. UOG had no players in double figures, but Maria Duenas and Arriah Arceo each scored 8 points.

The U17 Nationals improved to 1-0, while the Lady Tritons opened the season at 0-1.

In the BallHers’ victory, JusForFuns started slowly and did not score in the first seven minutes of the game. BallHers took a 23-6 lead at the end of the first period, with eight different players scoring to take control. By halftime, BallHers was ahead 44-15.

BallHers continued to dominate, outscoring JusForFuns 39-19 in the second half to secure the 83-34 win. Anslie Sarsaljo scored 27 points for BallHers, while Shania Aguon added 14. Arri Arceo led JusForFuns with 8 points.

BallHers is now 1-0, while JusForFuns falls to 0-1.
