In 1988, I accompanied Dr. Vivian Dames, founder of the University of Guam's Bachelor of Social Work program, to a meeting with the late Dr. Patricia Ewalt, then dean of the School of Social Work at the University of Hawaiʻi. We were told plainly that offering a Master of Social Work degree in Guam for UOG graduates would be impossible.

Several years later, during the University of Guam's first national accreditation review for social work, we heard a similar message. Accreditation leaders told us that an accredited Master of Social Work program connected to Guam was simply not feasible.
